CfP: Celebrity and the transnational

Special issue of Celebrity Studies journal:

CELEBRITY AND THE TRANSNATIONAL

This special issue of the new journal Celebrity Studies will provide a space for
discussion about the internationalization of celebrity: including the various movements
(or non-movement) of celebrities across borders; the translation of their meanings into
different contexts; the different effects of celebrity between countries and cultures;
the use of the celebrity to 'aid' trans/national causes (or 'other countries'); and the
phenomenon of the 'global star'.

It encourages submissions which are intradisciplinary, which consider 'celebrity' in a
historical as well as a contemporary context, and which are creative in their
theoretical approach to the power dynamics of the global and the transnational.

Papers might consider, but are not limited to, the following topics:
   * Celebrity and diaspora
   * The cosmopolitan celebrity
   * Glocalisation and transnational media distribution
   * Celebrity colonialism and imperial images
   * Comparative case studies of different national contexts
   * The limited (or expansive) reach of 'the global star'
   * Theorising celebrity in relation to the transversal, transcultural and transnational
   * Pre-celebrity: the cultural travels of historical stars
   * The routes and flows of global celebrity
   * Hidden celebrities: lost in translation
   * Celebrity privilege and transnational charity
   * Political figures and the fashioning of international fame
   * Globalised anti-celebrity

About Celebrity Studies

http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/rcel

Celebrity Studies is a journal that focuses on the critical exploration of celebrity,
stardom and fame. It seeks to make sense of celebrity by drawing upon a range of
(inter)disciplinary approaches, media forms, historical periods and national contexts.
Celebrity Studies aims to address key issues in the production, circulation and
consumption of fame, and its manifestations in both contemporary and historical
contexts, while functioning as a key site for academic debate about celebrity studies
itself.
