How to Present an Academic Topic to Wider Audience: The Popularization of Media Studies

Short abstract of the presentation:
The workshop How to Present an Academic Topic to Wider Audience: The Popularization of Media Studies is mainly focused on improving and developing presentation and communication skill of media studies students in the field of presenting their own academic field to the wider audience. During the workshop, students working in small teams of four to five people will prepare a short presentation introducing a chosen topic which belongs to the field of media studies (concept, theory, methodological approach, transdisciplinary overlap, application, etc.) and is related to their phd theses. The results of the team work will be presented and recorded. The presentations will be analyzed within the workshop.

Short biography:
Areas of expertise: media performance, media literacy and education, Czech media Jan Jirák, media studies professor, PhDr., Ph.D., (1958) – a member of the Department of Media Studies and founding member of the Center for Media Studies CEMES, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Prague. He received a status of docent (associated professor) in the field of Media studies (theses: Media Literacy) in 2002 and the status of professor in 2008. He is an adjunct professor at New York University in Prague and a lecturer at Metropolitan University in Prague. He is a co-author of several books, including Introduction to Media Studies (2001), Media and Society (2003) Principles of Media Education (2007), and Mass Media (2009). In 1997-2000, he chaired the Council of Czech Public Television. He is an author of Concept of Media Education for Basic and Secondary Education of the Framework Program of General Education of the Czech Republic. He translates novels (Updike, Vonnegut, Le Carré, Auster) as well as media-related texts (McQuail, DeFleur-Ball-Rokeach, Thompson, Meyrowitz, Curran). (email: jirak@fsv.cuni.cz)
